Westmill wind farm went full operational on 18th March 2008 and is now Carbon Positive.
Since commissioning, the wind farm has produced electricity every day and is currently producing slightly ahead of its predicted output. To date the wind farm has produced almost 9,000,000 kWh of electricity and is on target to produce the predicted 12 Gwh; equivalent to the annual domestic electricity consumption of around 2,500 homes or 7,500 people.
In the Environmental Statement that accompanied the planning application it was calculated that it would take Westmill between 6 9 months to repay all the embedded energy that had gone into the fabrication of the components (including the cement for the foundations, the steel towers etc), the transportation of all components to site, the civil engineering works on site to construct the wind farm and the eventual decommissioning of the wind farm, in 25 years time.
Westmill wind farm has been operating to plan for 9 months and can now proudly boast that it is carbon positive!
Westmill director Adam Twine said This is good news for the 2,400 owners of Westmill Co-op who, almost exactly three years ago, invested 4.5 million into the project, its also positive encouragement for other community groups who are considering embarking on similar initiatives and in its own small way, it is good news for our efforts to avert very damaging climate change.
