Wind Wands

at last first sod is cut
the sod is cut
that plants wind wands
that cup the breeze
to stop the increase
of shortness of breath
of ozone death
cup the breeze
that lifts the lid
for the asthma kid

the sod is cut
marking victory over
dogged debate dogged by political dogma
debate that sabotaged camouflaged democracy

as today’s children and future generations
gaze at the wind wands
set to become as popular as Harry Potter
set to generate eco power hour by hour by hour
gaze at wind wands fuelling magical solutions
to the fury of fossil fuel
perhaps they’ll pause a moment
to acknowledge Adam
and the band of warriors he drew towards him
for digging in so deep, so long, so long
so long that wind-time has come
first sod is out
wind wands, it’s your turn now
cast your eco spells

a performance poem written and performed by Tony Hillier at the 12 June 2004 celebration of the struggle to success of Adam Twine and many others who won planning permission to erect 5 wind turbines at Westmill Farm near Faringdon, Oxfordshire.
